From MSP to STP

MSP owners are becoming professional operators: standard platforms, closer vendor partnerships and specialist providers are now normal. The bigger opportunity in AI is still being left on the table.

Atomic IT activities will commoditise. The client knowledge, relationships and resilience of founder-led MSPs will not, and they are what customers value most.

Alongside the strategic reset, three practical moves: put AI accountability at executive level, rework your tooling, and rethink your offer.

Acquire, partner or build? Each route to innovation has its traps for an incumbent service provider. The future STP will likely need a blend of all three, led from the top.

Change feels better when you’re driving it. For MSPs that means rebooting delivery and business models, going deeper with customers, and learning to say no a lot more often.

Tweaking offerings with AI terminology won’t do. With baseline services commoditising and value hard to price, the MSPs that commit to a forward-only path are the ones that will win.

AI is moving from experiments to production, and the buyer is moving outside IT. MSPs that become strategic partners for that shift will be in demand; those selling units of IT will see margins disappear.

The Strategic Technology Partner sounds good in theory. In practice it starts with earning a seat at the decision-making table, and with the right consultants, partners or acquisitions behind you.

Customers are re-evaluating their service providers as AI moves value from units of managed IT to business outcomes. That shift creates a new role: the Strategic Technology Partner.

An ‘AI strategy’ boxes AI into a department and delivers incremental change. What most organisations, and most service providers, need is a new strategy with AI at its core.
